DF-3 Tool Steel
DF-3 is a cold work oil-quenched tool steel developed by ASSAB (Sweden), based on a manganese-chromium-tungsten alloy design. This steel variety combines excellent machinability with high surface hardness and toughness after heat treatment. It is an economical general-purpose cold work die steel and is often used in production scenarios where dimensional stability and processability are required.

DF-3 Tool Steel Physical Properties
- Density: approximately 7.67 g/cm³ (at room temperature); 400 °C dropped to approximately 7.61 g/cm³.
- Elastic modulus: approximately 193 GPa at 20 °C; About 173 GPa at 400 °C.
- Coefficient of thermal expansion: 20-200 °C approximately 12.4×10⁻⁶/K; Up to 400 °C, it is approximately 13.4×10⁻⁶/K.
- Thermal conductivity: approximately 20 W/m·K at room temperature, and can reach 23 W/m·K at 400 °C.
- Specific heat capacity: approximately 0.460 J/g·°C (20 °C).
DF-3 Tool Steel Mechanical & Performance Properties
- Extremely strong wear resistance: The high-carbon and high-chromium structure forms a large number of carbides, making it particularly suitable for cold working scenarios with high wear resistance requirements
- High compressive strength: After heat treatment, the hardness varies from HRC 56 to 65, and the compressive strength can reach 3100 MPa (at 62 HRC).
- Good permeability and dimensional stability: Uniform hardening during heat treatment, strong resistance to tempering softening
- Medium toughness: Moderate impact toughness, not suitable for extremely high impact environments.
