5XHM Tool Steel
5XHM is a medium carbon alloyed hot work mould steel derived from the Soviet standard (ГОСТ) and designed for high shock loads and medium temperature operating environments. Its core properties are excellent toughness and high temperature stability. Vacuum refining and pre-hardening ensures high purity and homogeneity of the organisation, which makes it particularly suitable for the manufacture of large moulds with complex shapes and heavy loads (e.g. hammer forging moulds, edge-cutting moulds), as well as for good thermal fatigue and wear resistance. The corresponding American ASTM grade for 5XHM is L6, the Japanese JIS grade is SKT4, the German DIN/W-Nr grade is 55NiCrMoV6/1.1.2713, and the Chinese standard GB grade is 3Cr2W8V.

5XHM Tool Steel Chemical Composition
The composition of 5XHM is designed with the goal of balancing strength and toughness, with the following key element ratios:
- Carbon (C): 0.50-0.60% → Secures base hardness and wear resistance.
- Nickel (Ni): 1.40-1.80% → core alloying element that significantly improves toughness and hardenability.
- Chromium (Cr): 0.50-0.80% → enhances corrosion resistance and high temperature strength.
- Molybdenum (Mo): 0.15-0.30% → refine the grain, inhibit temper brittleness.
- Manganese (Mn): 0.50-0.80%, silicon (Si): 0.1-0.40% → deoxidation solid solution strengthening.
- Impurity control: sulfur (S) ≤ 0.030%, phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.030% → reduce the tendency to thermal embrittlement.

5XHM Tool Steel Smelting process
FCS TOOL STEEL Factory's 5XHM Tool Steel is produced through a sophisticated smelting process comprising Electric Arc Furnace (EF) initial melting for molten steel preparation, Ladle Furnace (LF) refining to adjust chemical composition and remove impurities, Vacuum Degassing (VD) treatment to reduce gas content and enhance purity, followed by hot rolling or hot forging to shape the material and refine its grain structure, and final annealing to eliminate internal stresses, soften the steel, and improve machinability—all working together to ensure the steel's high quality, uniform performance, and suitability for demanding industrial applications.
5XHM Tool Steel Physical Properties
- Hardness: ≤241 HB in annealed condition, up to 300-350 HB in pre-hardened condition.
- Thermal stability: hardness at 500 ℃ to maintain ≥ 300 HB, low coefficient of thermal expansion (12.5 × 10-⁶ / ℃), to reduce the risk of high-temperature deformation.
- Thermal conductivity: medium thermal conductivity (~30 W/m-K), need to cooperate with the cooling design to avoid mould thermal cracking.
5XHM Tool Steel Mechanical & Performance Properties
- High toughness and impact resistance: nickel-vanadium synergism absorbs impact energy and prevents mould cracking, especially suitable for heavy-duty forging scenarios.
- Thermal fatigue resistance: low crack expansion rate under cyclic loading in the medium temperature range (≤600℃), prolonging the life of the die.
- Machining adaptability:Excellent cutting performance in annealed state (hardness ≤ 241 HB).Good weldability, support for filler repair (need to preheat to 300 ℃).
- Economy: 30% lower cost than high-speed steel, and can be reused by multiple tempering tooling.
5XHM Tool Steel Product Applications
- 5XHM is designed for high stress hot work moulds, mainly used in:
- Forging industry: hammer forging dies, crankshaft forging dies, large gear precision forging dies (to withstand >500℃ instantaneous high temperature).
- Die casting auxiliary tooling: die holders, ejector plates, trimming dies (need to resist aluminium/magnesium alloy melt washout).
- Stamping field: thick plate fine blanking die (≥6mm plate), hot shear blade.
- Plastic moulds: injection mould inserts made of glass fibre reinforced materials (wear resistance required).
