P18 Tool Steel
P18 (R18) high-speed steel is a classic and high-performance steel grade with high hardness, high red hardness and high wear resistance. It combines excellent toughness and resistance to hot cracking, making it suitable for a variety of high-strength cutting and cold working tools. It has wide international equivalence, mature smelting technology, stable and reliable performance, and is a highly cost-effective choice in engineering and manufacturing.

P18 Tool Steel Physical Properties
- Density: ≈ 8800 kg/m³
- Modulus of elasticity: ≈ 228 GPa at 20°C, decreasing to about 180 GPa at 600°C.
- Thermal conductivity: 20℃≈26 W/(m-K), 400-600℃≈29-27 W/(m-K)
- Specific heat capacity: 20 ℃ ≈ 419 J / (kg - K); with the rise in temperature increases gradually
- Resistivity: 20℃ ≈419 nΩ-m, to 600℃ ≈922 nΩ-m
P18 Tool Steel Mechanical & Performance Properties
- High hardness: After quenching (oil quenching at 1280℃), the hardness can reach 61-66 HRC. The higher the tempering temperature, the lower the hardness but the higher the toughness. Typically, it is about 65 HRC.
- Excellent red hardness: It remains stable at high hardness up to 600℃, making it suitable for high-speed cutting environments.
- Combining wear resistance and toughness: High tungsten and vanadium elements form hard carbides, which also have sufficient toughness to be suitable for impact environments.
- Excellent thermal crack resistance: It has good thermal stability after heat treatment and outstanding crack resistance.
P18 Tool Steel Product Applications
- Cutting tools: milling cutters, drills, taps, reamers, etc.
- Precision tools: forming tools, gear shaping tools and tool blanks.
- Cold working dies: used for stamping, cutting, punching and blade manufacturing.
- High-temperature rolling and cutting applications: It performs exceptionally well in environments with high heat resistance requirements.
